The Atom

The Atom
You will need to use your textbook to make this part of your wiki (pg. 311 - 317)

Define:

  • Atom: the smallest particle into which an element of all the naturally occurring isotopes of an element.
  • Element: a pure substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by physical or chemical means.

What's Inside of an Atom:
  • Draw a diagram of what an atom looks like (use pg. 312) as a guide
    • label all the parts
    • Write a description of each labeled part

.

Building an Element:
  • The proton helps you identify the elements inside the atom. Another name for the proton is atomic number.
  • There are no charge in an atom because a positive and negative together equal zero which is no charge.
  • Complete the table
Element
Atomic #
# of Protons
Carbon 6 6
Chlorine 17 17
Silver 79 79
Potassium 19 19

  • Isotopes: (define it, then come up with 3 statements about isotopes)
    • Atoms that have the same number of protons but have different numbers of neutrons.
    • Atoms that are isotopes of each other are always the same element because the number of protons in each atom is the same.
    • All 3 isotopes are colorless, odorless gases at room temperature.
    • You can identify each isotope of an element by its mass number.

# Protons: 2
# Neutrons: 1
# Electrons: None
Mass number: 3
